An intriguing possibility
The Archbishop of Madrid, José Cobo, has opened the door to a possible meeting between Pope Leo XIV and the famous Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny. This event could take place during the pontiff's visit to Spain, scheduled from June 6 to 12, coinciding with a series of concerts that the artist has planned in the capital.
On the first day of the papal visit, Saturday, June 6, a youth vigil will be held in the Plaza de Lima. Interestingly, this event will coincide with Bad Bunny's fifth concert in Madrid. In a recent interview with Europa Press, Cobo commented that “Madrid offers a lot” and suggested that the parties involved are more interested in creating connections than in establishing divisions.
Cobo assured that if Bad Bunny learns of the pope's presence and wishes to meet him, “the Pope will surely receive him, as he receives everyone.” This statement highlights an inclusive approach by the Vatican towards influential figures in contemporary culture. The Archdiocese of Madrid is willing to collaborate to facilitate any kind of meeting, although Cobo emphasized that such surprises are usually organized “very discreetly.”
When asked what advice he would give to young people who must choose between attending the concert or participating in religious events, Cobo was clear: “Go where you want.” However, he stressed that the vigil is not just another event; it represents an “important moment in terms of embrace,” designed to attract those who feel disconnected from the Church or are seeking spiritual purpose.
Cobo also addressed the absence of other artists like Rosalía, who is currently immersed in her tour. Despite this, he made it clear that there are no barriers to future coincidences. Furthermore, he defended his artistic work by pointing out that not only an orthodox spirituality is rewarded but also a commitment to values such as truth and justice.
Finally, the cardinal referred to the group Hakuna, a prominent participant in the youth vigil. Following a recent episcopal document on the “emotional bombardment” present in some pastoral initiatives, Cobo clarified that this text was not directed against anyone specific. He emphasized that attitudes prioritizing sentimental experiences over the Gospel can manifest in any ecclesial context.
