A New Home for the Picasso Collection
The Picasso Museum in Buitrago de Lozoya, which houses a valuable collection donated by Eugenio Arias, the barber of the renowned Málaga painter, is about to enter a new phase. The Community of Madrid has given the green light for the rehabilitation works of the historic building that will host the collection, currently displayed in the basement of the Town Hall. This change aims not only to improve the visibility and accessibility of the works but also to culturally revitalise the region.
With an estimated investment of 3.5 million euros, sourced from the Regional Investment Programme (PIR) 2022-2026, the works are scheduled to be completed within 15 months. The public company Planifica Madrid will be responsible for carrying out this transformation. The objective is clear: to provide a modern and functional space that highlights the artistic and cultural significance of the museum.
Eugenio Arias, known as Pablo Picasso's personal barber, donated an extensive collection to the municipality with the express wish that it be exhibited locally. This collection includes 75 works, including drawings, ceramics, and other objects related to the artist. Additionally, pieces not created by Picasso but equally significant, such as photographs and busts, will be incorporated.
Recently, regional councillors Miguel Ángel García Martín and Mariano de Paco Serrano visited Buitrago to learn about the project's details. During their visit, García Martín highlighted that this new museum will not only benefit the locality but also regional development: "It is a key investment to boost the local economy." For his part, Serrano emphasised that this space will be a 21st-century museum, designed to serve the community.
The new building will feature nearly 400 square metres, spread over two floors plus a loft area for technical installations. Original architectural elements such as cornices and brackets will be preserved during the works. The upper floor will be exclusively dedicated to permanent exhibitions, ensuring optimal conditions for preserving the works thanks to its design without direct natural light.
As the preliminary works for the museum's definitive relocation progress, its inauguration is expected to take place in 2027. This project represents not only a significant advancement in the local cultural offering but also a unique opportunity to attract tourism and artistic interest to Buitrago de Lozoya.
