A Tradition That Transcends Generations
The town of Chinchón, located south of Madrid, is preparing for one of the most anticipated celebrations of the year: the Living Passion. This event, which has been declared a National Tourist Interest Festival since 1980, will take place on Holy Saturday and promises to be an unforgettable spectacle that attracts both locals and visitors.
With over 60 years of tradition, the Living Passion is considered the oldest representation in the Community of Madrid. Since its inception in 1963, this emotional Stations of the Cross has evolved into a cultural and tourist reference. Each year, around 250 volunteer neighbours dress in historical costumes to bring to life the scenes that narrate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
As night falls over Chinchón, its streets transform into an evocative Jerusalem. The performance begins at the Town Hall with the iconic Last Supper, where the actors initiate the dramatic journey. Subsequently, attendees are guided to the San Roque square to witness The Prayer in the Garden, followed by the arrest by the Romans.
Throughout the route, spectators will witness eight scenes filled with colour and drama. Among the most impactful moments are the falls of Jesus Christ and his encounters with key figures such as Pontius Pilate, who presides from an imposing balcony. The procession moves towards emblematic locations such as the main square and Calvary, where crucial moments like the crucifixion are depicted.
The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the Resurrection, which takes place at the church of La Asunción. This magical moment is accompanied by special effects including white smoke and flying doves, symbolising the glorious ascension. This scene not only represents a religious act but also a community celebration that unites all present.
Apart from the profound religious and cultural significance of this festivity, each year it attracts a growing number of tourists eager to experience this unique representation. The historical charm of the old town, along with local fervour, makes Chinchón an unmissable destination during this time.
