A space for the female voice in cinema
From 2 to 5 March, Nebrija University will become a meeting point for filmmakers, academics, and enthusiasts of the seventh art with the celebration of the III Ellas Dirigen Cycle. This event, which highlights female participation in directing and screenwriting, aims to foster a critical dialogue about the current dynamics of Spanish cinema.
Activities will begin with a talk by Mar Olid, known for her success in comedies such as Sin cobertura, who will explore the rise of women in leadership roles. The screening of her film will be followed by an analysis of how to manage commercial productions with tight budgets.
The cycle will also pay tribute to Colombia as the guest country. On 3 March, Los reyes del mundo, directed by Laura Mora, will be screened. On this occasion, Karel Solei, casting director, will participate in a round table discussing acting preparation techniques and safety protocols during filming.
The event will culminate on the 4th with the presentation of La furia, a work that has been recognised with several awards at the Málaga Festival. Its screenwriter, Eva Pauné, will discuss the narrative challenges related to sensitive topics such as sexual violence within the cinematic context.
In addition to the screenings, from 2 to 13 March, attendees will be able to visit the exhibition titled Las voces confiadas. Curated by researchers from the CIMUED Chair, this exhibition seeks to highlight the artistic and narrative contributions of emerging female directors in Spanish cinema. On the 5th, a guided tour will be offered to delve deeper into the themes addressed.
Under the auspices of the CIMUED Chair (Cinema, Women, and Education), this cycle not only promotes female visibility but also drives educational policies that foster professional opportunities for women in various areas of cinema. With researchers from over 20 Ibero-American universities, this effort aims to map and improve the employment situation of women within the audiovisual sector.
As this cycle progresses, a programme supported by ICETEX and Nebrija University will also be launched to strengthen women's professional competencies. This intensive course aims to prepare women to take on leading roles within the Colombian audiovisual field.
