There are politicians who live for the headlines and politicians who prefer the headlines to speak only of their work. Pilar Alegría has been trying to do the latter for years, although with varying success depending on the day. Former Minister of Education, former government spokesperson and current Secretary General of the PSOE in Aragón, this woman from a small Aragonese town with a significant career is one of the most recognisable figures in recent Spanish politics. But who is she really beyond the press conferences?
Origins and education: from La Zaida to the Government of Spain
María del Pilar Alegría Continente was born on November 1, 1977, in La Zaida, Zaragoza, a municipality so small that if you blink while driving along the A-2, you will probably miss it. In the last census of 2021, La Zaida had just 432 inhabitants. She spent her childhood and youth there before moving away to study.
Trained in the educational field, she holds a diploma in Teaching with a specialty in Primary Education from the University of Zaragoza, and has a master's degree in Advanced Studies in Social Education from the Complutense University of Madrid. A solid academic background, although the curious thing is that, despite studying to be a teacher, she never actually worked as one.
Before dedicating herself entirely to politics, Alegría held a variety of jobs: picking fruit in the fields, working as a waitress, sexing chicks, or as a technician in an IT company. If that isn’t life experience, then let God come and see it.
How she entered politics: students, books, and UGT
In the late 1990s, she joined UGT and shortly after the PSOE during her university years, when she began to feel curious about how things worked and to get to know the associative fabric and student movements. As she has explained in interviews, reading played a significant role in that political awakening: “I think it’s essential to open your mind, to realise that you know less than you think”, she stated on one occasion.
Political career: from the Cortes de Aragón to the Council of Ministers
Pilar Alegría's career is a progressive ascent, with stops at almost all possible institutional levels. She was a deputy in the Cortes Generales for Zaragoza from 2008 to 2015. After that, she moved to the autonomous sphere, where she served as the Minister of Innovation, Research and University in the Government of Aragón from 2015 to 2019, during the administration led by Javier Lambán.
In 2019, she made the leap to state representation: she was appointed Government Delegate in Aragón, a position from which she represented the central government in the autonomous community. And in July 2021, Pedro Sánchez chose her for one of the most complex and publicly debated ministries: she was appointed Minister of Education and Vocational Training, replacing Isabel Celaá.
Her ascent didn’t stop there. In November 2023, she also took on the role of spokesperson for the Government of Spain, becoming the visible face of the Executive in the endless press conferences following the Council of Ministers. A position that combines diplomacy, nerves of steel, and the ability to respond without actually answering, all in one.
The leap back to Aragón
It was in December 2024 when Pilar Alegría announced her resignation from her roles as minister and government spokesperson to focus on the regional elections in Aragón. She was proclaimed Secretary General of PSOE Aragón in January 2025, thus closing a circle that brings her back to her political roots. With those elections on the horizon, the Aragonese faces the most personal challenge of her career: convincing her constituents.
Personal life: partner, child, and strict privacy
This is where Pilar Alegría draws the curtains and hangs the sign saying “closed for renovations.” The minister has always maintained a striking discretion regarding her sentimental and family life, something that, in today’s political ecosystem, is almost an act of rebellion.
Official sources and recognised media agree on one key point: there are no public records of a current partner nor appearances at official events linked to her sentimental environment. Some media have published names of supposed partners, but without solid verification. What is confirmed is that she is the mother of a child born in 2011.
Her child, the centre of her personal world
The little one is, in her own words, her main priority outside of work. In a 2018 interview, she confessed: “Right now, my main hobby is spending time with my child, and quality time. I also love to travel, but since becoming a mother and taking on political responsibilities, I have less time for that.”
The most publicised controversy surrounding her motherhood came in 2024: it was said that her child was studying in a private school, which sparked numerous criticisms while she was Minister of Education. Alegría denied it and clarified that the child attends a public school. A statement that, beyond the anecdote, says a lot about the coherence she tries to maintain between her political discourse and her personal decisions.

Pilar Alegría has two siblings, Alfredo Alegría Continente and Olga Alegría Continente, who were part of the PP candidacy for the La Zaida City Council. Yes, you read that right: siblings in the PP. In family politics, anything is possible, and in small towns even more so.
As for her hobbies, she is passionate about reading, especially poetry, and artists like Rozalén. She enjoys indie music, terraces with friends, and everyday moments that disconnect her from institutional noise. Pilar Alegría is, in short, a politician with a technical profile and rural roots who has climbed to the most visible positions in the Government without entirely losing that desire to maintain a personal life away from the spotlight.
