A unanimous verdict that sets a precedent
In a case that has captured the attention of all Spain, the jury has unanimously found three men guilty of involvement in the murder of Bori, a 19-year-old Venezuelan. This tragic event occurred in October 2022, following a fight at the Diverso nightclub in Alcorcón. The jury's decision not only seeks justice for the victim but also sends a clear message about gun violence.
The fateful night began with a birthday celebration that quickly turned violent. After a dispute inside the venue, Bori and his friends were heading home when they were intercepted by the accused. A car abruptly stopped in front of them, and two armed men emerged shooting. According to witnesses and the evidence presented during the trial, one of the attackers shouted “Kill them, kill them”, triggering a hail of bullets.
Bori was struck by a bullet in his left shoulder and fell to the ground. However, his attackers did not stop; they executed him with a shot to the head just a few meters away. This brutal act has left a deep mark on the local community and has raised urgent questions about public safety and gun control.
The prosecution has requested maximum sentences of up to 55 years for each of the accused, while their defenders have argued for their complete acquittal. In addition to the completed murder, the jury also found the three men guilty of attempted homicide against two other young people present during the attack.
Despite the defensive allegations suggesting a possible crossfire between rival gangs, the jury determined that there was only sufficient evidence to convict the accused for illegal possession of firearms. This reinforces the idea that there was no exchange of gunfire as the defenses attempted to argue.
As the formal sentencing by the judge is awaited, the defenses have already announced their intention to appeal to the High Court of Justice of Madrid (TSJM). This case is not only significant from a legal perspective; it also raises questions about how to address broader issues related to youth violence and the misuse of firearms in Spain.
