The new Más Madrid venue in Getafe becomes a cultural meeting point. The inauguration includes an exhibition by artist Martín Ibáñez and a fanzine workshop to promote Pride.
The city of Getafe has taken a significant step towards inclusion and cultural diversity with the opening of the new Más Madrid-Compromiso space, located on Leganés Street. This venue will not only serve as a political headquarters but will transform into a community centre where residents can actively participate in various cultural activities. The opening is celebrated with the exhibition ‘Cosas LGTBIQ+’ by local artist Martín Ibáñez, which will be available from Monday 22 to Friday 25 June. The party spokesperson, Ana González Mariscal, emphasized that this space aims to be an open place for all, fostering creativity and mutual support among citizens. “We want our venue to be much more than a political headquarters; we want it to be an open space that brings many people together through culture,” González Mariscal stated during the inauguration.
The exhibition ‘Cosas LGTBIQ+’ features works that address themes related to identity and personal freedom through art. According to Ibáñez, “inhabiting a body is a political position in itself,” which resonates deeply in the current context where struggles for civil rights are more relevant than ever. Additionally, the event will include a fanzine workshop scheduled for the same day as the opening, designed to encourage artistic and collective expression among attendees.
The cultural programme doesn’t end there; on Friday 26 June, ‘Archivo Glitter: Playing with LGTBIQ+ Pop History’ will take place, a playful activity aimed at exploring and celebrating popular culture related to Pride. This interactive proposal promises to be both educational and entertaining, inviting participants to test their knowledge of LGTBIQ+ pop history.
Más Madrid-Compromiso has also expressed its intention to prioritise projects linked to the municipality and those that promote values such as equality and social justice. The new space is designed to host a variety of activities: exhibitions, literary presentations, film forums, creative workshops, and small acoustic concerts.
This inclusive approach reflects a growing trend in many Spanish cities towards multifunctional cultural spaces that seek to integrate different voices and experiences within the social fabric. Compared to similar initiatives in other locations, such as those held in Madrid or Barcelona over the past decades, Getafe appears to be taking proactive steps to become a regional reference.
