Isabel Díaz Ayuso denounces a political attack on culture in Madrid

The President of Madrid speaks out on the boycott of Shakira

In a strong statement, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, has openly criticised what she considers a deliberate attempt by the central government to undermine culture and events in the region. Her comment comes after the recent letter sent by Francisco Martín, government delegate, requesting the suspension of the concerts scheduled by the famous singer Shakira.

Ayuso not only expressed her support for Shakira and her team but also committed to facilitating the success of these concerts. “We thank Shakira for coming to Madrid and we will do everything in our power to ensure that everything they organise is a complete success,” she stated. This stance contrasts with the attitude of the government delegate, who, according to Ayuso, acts under political instructions to hinder any positive initiative in the community.

The Madrid president did not hold back in her criticism of the government of Pedro Sánchez, pointing out that his administration seems to aim at destabilising what works in Madrid. “What they need to extinguish is our light,” said Ayuso, referring to the negative impact that the central government’s decisions can have on investments and cultural projects.

Ayuso also addressed broader issues related to security in Madrid. She asserted that the central government uses fear as a political tool: “They use the pretext of security to justify their actions,” she argued. The president emphasised that while there are serious problems such as illegal occupations or street violence, there is no effective response from the Spanish government.

The regional leader warned about the possible repercussions if this type of intervention continues. Iconic projects such as the ‘Shakira Stadium’ in Villaverde could be threatened by this negative dynamic. According to Ayuso, this situation reflects a broader pattern known as the ‘Sánchez manual’, where anything positive for Madrid is viewed with suspicion or directly attacked.

Ayuso concluded her remarks by calling on all Madrilenians to stay united against these attempts at boycott. The president emphasised that it is crucial to defend both cultural events and the necessary investments to keep the vibrant essence of Madrid alive.
