A new approach for events in Madrid
The Mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, has expressed his satisfaction with the recent decision by the Government delegate, Francisco Martín, to adopt a more collaborative approach regarding the concerts scheduled by Colombian artist Shakira. Instead of making public statements that could generate controversy, Almeida has welcomed the delegate's decision to sit down with the organisation to work together on the necessary improvements for the Iberdrola Music venue, located in Villaverde.
During a press conference, Almeida highlighted the importance of the delegate personally understanding the characteristics and needs of the project before making judgments. "It is essential that he gets directly involved and does not just speak from a media distance," he stated. The mayor urged Martín to collaborate and avoid hindering the development of cultural events in the Spanish capital.
Despite previous criticisms of the venue following the Harry Styles concert, Almeida defended that the issues have been addressed and corrected over time. "The last events were held under appropriate conditions of safety and mobility," he assured. This statement contrasts with the concerns previously expressed by the Government Delegation regarding deficiencies in accessibility and logistics.
As Shakira's musical residency approaches, Almeida emphasised that it is crucial to maintain an open dialogue among all parties involved. The meeting scheduled between Martín and the management company of Iberdrola Music aims to assess the "objective deficiencies" mentioned by the Government. However, Almeida stressed that such meetings are more productive than any negative public statement.
Moreover, Almeida questioned why emphasis has only been placed on issues related to the previous concert, while other events like the Mad Cool Festival, scheduled for 2024 and 2025, have not received similar attention. This suggests a possible inconsistency in how musical events within the same space are evaluated.
As Madrid seeks to establish itself as an attractive cultural destination, it is essential to address these logistical challenges. Collaboration between local authorities and organisers is vital to ensure not only safety but also a positive experience for all attendees.
