Innovation in Driver Training
The Municipal Transport Company (EMT) of Madrid has taken a significant step towards modernising its training process by integrating driving simulators into its educational programme. Since their implementation in April 2003, these devices have trained 6,638 drivers, with a notable increase since 2019, where 2,270 new students have gone through this innovative system.
Current aspiring drivers are experiencing practical sessions that include fifteen-minute simulations, designed to replicate real-world situations. During a recent visit to the operations centre in Fuencarral, delegate Borja Carabante was able to observe the latest updates to the system, which now incorporates a virtual circuit with 6.4 kilometres of bike lane. This addition allows future drivers to interact with bicycles and other vehicles in a safe environment.
The training team has four cabins that closely mimic the interior of a real bus. The software used recreates a virtual city similar to Madrid, adapting to both standard buses and articulated vehicles. This technology not only enhances the educational experience but also prepares students to face critical situations, such as adverse weather conditions or traffic congestion.
The City Council highlights that this methodology not only contributes to the effective training of drivers but also helps to reduce accidents and pollutant emissions. The uniformity in training ensures that all candidates receive equivalent training, which facilitates an objective assessment of performance.
As these innovations are implemented, EMT continues to expand its services. By 2025, a historic record of 512 million users is expected, evidencing a growing trend towards public transport over private vehicles. In fact, a 4.5% decrease in traffic has been recorded on key roads such as Calle 30 since 2019.
Attracting talent is crucial to maintaining this growth. The latest call attracted over 1,600 candidates, who must pass rigorous theoretical and practical tests before being considered fit to operate on any of the 229 municipal lines. This exhaustive process includes five intensive weeks combining theory and practice before allowing them to drive with passengers.
