The works at Atocha station will affect several Cercanías lines between July and September. Adif aims to improve the capacity and reliability of the rail service.
The works at Atocha station, which are in their final phase, will cause significant modifications to the Cercanías Madrid service from 17 July to 6 September. These interventions aim to increase circulation capacity and improve railway traffic management, according to Adif. During this period, users will need to pay attention to the changes affecting lines C-3, C-4, and C-5, as well as other important connections.
From 17 to 22 July, lines C-3, C-4, and C-5 will experience significant alterations. Line C-3 will start and end its route at Villaverde Bajo, requiring passengers wishing to reach Atocha or Chamartín to transfer to trains on line C-4. Meanwhile, line C-4a will be suspended between Atocha and Parla; travellers can use trains on line C-4b to continue their journey to Parla.
Line C-5 will also be affected, starting and ending its route at Atocha. Those needing to travel to Humanes/Fuenlabrada or Móstoles-El Soto will have to transfer at this same station.
From 23 July to 16 August, only line C-5 will be completely interrupted between Villaverde Alto and Embajadores. During this time, a frequency of every 10 minutes will be maintained for the Humanes/Fuenlabrada-Villaverde Alto and Móstoles El Soto–Embajadores routes. Additionally, there will be shuttle trains from Villaverde Alto to Méndez Álvaro with intermediate stops every 35 minutes.
Between 1 and 28 August, further works will impact lines C-2, C-7, C-8a, C-8b, and C-10. In particular, the frequencies for these lines will vary: for example, line C-2 will have services on the bypass track with adjusted frequencies depending on the schedule.
As September approaches, additional cuts will occur on the weekends of 29 and 30 August as well as 5 and 6 September in the Sol tunnel between Atocha and Nuevos Ministerios. This will require establishing temporary termini for the affected lines.
To mitigate the inconvenience caused by these scheduled cuts during the summer, Adif has provided an alternative through buses operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT). Travellers with a valid Cercanías ticket will be able to use these buses at no additional cost during the service interruptions.
These works are considered crucial to ensure a more efficient railway system in Madrid. According to historical data prior to these significant improvements made by Adif over a decade ago, such interventions have proven effective in reducing waiting times and increasing user satisfaction. With this in mind, it is essential for travellers to plan their journeys in advance during this summer period.
