A historic visit to the Spanish capital
Pope León XIV arrived in Madrid this Saturday, June 6, where he will be received by the Kings of Spain and the Prime Minister. This meeting marks a new stage in the relations between the Holy See and Spain, highlighting the importance of the papal visit in an increasingly interconnected global context.
After his official commitments, which include a prayer vigil with young people in the Plaza de Lima, the Pope will retire to rest at the Apostolic Nunciature. This building is not only the official residence of the apostolic nuncio in Spain, but it has also been the chosen place by other pontiffs during their visits to the country. The Nunciature is located on Pío XII Avenue, in the Chamartín district, an area that combines tradition and modernity.
The current apostolic nuncio, Piero Pioppo, an Italian archbishop appointed by León XIV in September 2025, will be the one to welcome the Pope upon his arrival. The choice of this space is not casual; it is a place filled with history and symbolism for the Catholic Church. In this very building, a condolence book was recently signed for the passing of Pope Francis, adding an emotional layer to this visit.
The Apostolic Nunciature has witnessed numerous significant events since its relocation to Chamartín in 1958. Previously, it had been located for more than two centuries in the Nuncio's Palace, situated in the historic Madrid of the Habsburgs. This rich cultural and religious heritage makes the building a nerve centre for ecclesiastical and institutional activities.
Located right across from the Ilunion Hotel and adjacent to a National Police station, the Nunciature serves not only as a papal residence but also as a diplomatic headquarters where important meetings take place between ecclesiastical and governmental representatives. This environment further strengthens the ties between the Church and Spanish institutions.
