A setback for Vox's leadership
Javier Ortega Smith, municipal spokesperson for Vox in the Madrid City Council, has achieved a significant victory in his struggle against the party's leadership. A court has dismissed the extremely precautionary measures requested by two councillors aligned with the national leadership, who sought to remove him along with two other councillors from the municipal group. This decision allows Ortega Smith to continue performing his duties while legal proceedings related to his potential expulsion are resolved.
The confrontation between Ortega Smith and the national leadership of Vox, based at the headquarters on Bambú Street, has escalated in recent weeks. The spokesperson has described the attempt at expulsion as a “local tyranny”, asserting that the courts are beginning to recognise that fundamental rights are being violated. In his own words, “anyone who does not bend like a loyal vassal is belittled and singled out.”
Apart from this favourable ruling for Ortega Smith, the internal conflict within the party remains open on multiple fronts. The national leadership has filed an administrative lawsuit seeking to force the immediate departure of the expelled councillors. However, the court has deemed that there are not sufficient reasons to execute this urgent measure.
Ortega Smith and his allies, Carla Toscano and José Antonio Ansaldo, have chosen to challenge their expulsion in civil jurisdiction, arguing that the decisions made by the party's internal bodies are arbitrary and violate their fundamental rights. This second procedure seeks to question the legality of the actions taken by Vox's leadership.
The current situation reflects a tense climate within the Spanish political party. Ortega Smith maintains that such decisions are clear examples of how some members have transformed Vox into “a kind of personalist tyranny”. Despite the judicial setback suffered by his internal opponents, the political future for both him and his colleagues remains uncertain.
