A tribute to scientific dedication
The biochemist Mariano Barbacid, recognised for his contributions to the field of oncology, was awarded the Madrid Medal of Honour at a ceremony held at the iconic Palacio de Cibeles. This event, coinciding with the San Isidro festivities, not only celebrates his professional career but also his firm commitment to truth and scientific knowledge.
During his speech, Barbacid emphasised the importance of scientific rigor, stating that "in these times, more than ever we must focus on certain facts." His message became a call to prioritise knowledge over the media noise that often surrounds science. "Truth is built with data," he underscored, urging for honest debate and respect for dissenting opinions as fundamental pillars for progress.
Barbacid also shared personal memories of his childhood in Madrid, recalling significant moments from his youth in the Cuatro Caminos neighbourhood and his closeness to the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Despite being a fervent supporter of the white team, he humorously mentioned his relatives who supported Atlético, which elicited laughter from the attendees.
Despite the recognition received, Barbacid has faced recent challenges related to his research. Last February, he announced a significant breakthrough in the elimination of pancreatic cancer in animal models. However, this success was overshadowed by a media controversy following the temporary withdrawal of his study due to editorial issues. The researcher denounced what he considers an unfair campaign against him and his work.
Despite the difficulties and criticisms received, Barbacid reaffirmed his commitment to science: "My scientific work will continue with even more determination if possible." He also recently announced his complete disassociation from Vega Oncotargets, renouncing any economic benefits related to his patents to ensure the integrity and continuity of his research.
