A political challenge in Leganés
The mayor of Leganés, Miguel Ángel Recuenco, has decided to risk his position by submitting to a vote of confidence in an attempt to unblock the municipal budgets for 2026. This move, reminiscent of a similar play last year, has once again been rejected by the opposition, composed of PSOE, Más Madrid, Podemos-IU and Vox.
In an extraordinary Plenary held last Friday, the four opposition groups voted against both the vote of confidence and the accounts presented by the local Government, which includes the PP and ULEG. This decision activates a critical 30-day period during which the opposition could attempt to articulate a motion of censure against Recuenco.
That maneuver from the previous year allowed the mayor to approve the budgets after a similar situation; however, it left a trail of political confrontations that have marked this legislature. In his defence, Recuenco argued that it is essential to have updated budgets to advance projects that benefit the city.
However, the possibility of a successful motion of censure seems complicated. The lack of consensus among the opposition forces could hinder the selection of a common candidate capable of gathering the necessary support. This scenario already failed last year due to ideological differences among the parties.
Unless an agreement is reached before the end of the legal deadline, the budgets will be automatically approved, allowing the Government to continue operating despite its minority status. Meanwhile, Recuenco continues to defend his position as a struggle between governability and political blockage.
Relations between the Government and the opposition are more strained than ever. The recent vote of confidence has reignited criticism of the local Executive's economic project and has fostered a hostile atmosphere within the City Council. The opposition sees this move as a desperate strategy to maintain control over municipal decisions.
