A controversial trip
The recent official visit of Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, to Mexico has generated intense political debate in Spain. The agenda of the trip and Ayuso's absence from significant events such as the San Isidro celebrations have been the subject of criticism from various sectors, including the central Government and the opposition.
The Minister of Health, Mónica García, was quick to express her disagreement with Ayuso's decision. In an ironic tone, she commented that Ayuso seems to be “more of Cancún than Madrid,” suggesting that her focus was more on foreign matters than on local issues. Furthermore, García accused the Madrid president of attempting to create a political confrontation during a health crisis related to hantavirus.
From the parliamentary group Más Madrid, spokesperson Manuela Bergerot joined the criticism, describing the trip as a “shame” and questioning the tangible results for the community. According to Bergerot, several days without an agenda during her stay highlight a lack of commitment to Madrid's interests.
Despite the torrent of criticism, the PP spokesperson in the Assembly, Carlos Díaz Pache, defended the relations between Spain and Mexico as “sister” and denied any diplomatic tension. He stated that Mexican citizens are well received in Spain and rejected accusations of a supposed boycott instigated by the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum.
The general secretary of the PP, Alfonso Serrano, also responded to the criticism, assuring that his party has nothing to hide and comparing the trip to other government travels. Serrano highlighted that the PP is currently the only party with clear candidates for the upcoming municipal and regional elections.
Serrano did not hold back on sarcastic comments towards his political opponents: “Yes, don’t you see how depressed we are?” referring to what he considers a growing weakness within the opposition bloc. Tensions between the parties are escalating as elections approach, making it clear that this episode will not be easily forgotten.
