A fair that transcends borders
La Casa Encendida is preparing to welcome the much-anticipated Mutant Books Madrid Art Book Fair from 24 to 26 April 2026, an event that promises to be the most ambitious to date. This year, more than 50% of the exhibitors will be international, with representatives from countries such as Iran, Egypt, South Korea, and Greece, as well as innovative proposals from Europe and America. The fair has established itself as a meeting point for publishers, designers, and artists looking to explore new forms of publishing.
Through an open call, Mutant Books has selected projects that reflect the richness and diversity of the contemporary publishing landscape. This approach not only highlights the importance of self-publishing and the DIY spirit but also promotes a space where different publishing practices can coexist and exchange ideas.
Under the slogan The Illusion of Transparency, this edition invites reflection on the distances between what is desired to be communicated and what is actually understood. This concept plays with how messages are transformed in their reception, generating multiple readings and interpretations. In this sense, Mutant Books presents itself as an environment where meanings are fluid and open to diverse interpretations.
The programme will include prominent international guests linked to graphic design and visual culture. Among them is the studio Experimental Jetset, known for its innovative publications and installations from Amsterdam. Additionally, the type design studio Displaay from Prague will share its creative process behind type design.
Equally important will be the participation of Able Zine, a London-based platform focused on accessibility and disability, which will offer a workshop centred on rethinking editorial design from an inclusive perspective.
The programming will also encompass proposals that connect art with digital environments. The project La Geomofa, led by Sebastián Paduano, will use the popular game GeoGuessr to explore how we interpret our world through digital maps. On the other hand, cultural critic Frankie Pizá will address contemporary issues such as the circulation of images on social media and their cultural impact.
As a new feature this year, Mutant Books will take place in several spaces within La Casa Encendida. The Laboratory will host workshops, talks, and presentations throughout the day, while the courtyard will feature continuous musical programming selected through an open call. This combination aims to create a vibrant atmosphere where visual and sound arts converge.
