A yellow wave invades Madrid
This past Thursday, the iconic Plaza de Callao became the perfect setting for an event that attracted more than 200 people, all with a common goal: to participate in the voice casting for Universal's new film, Minions and Monsters. The event, which promises to be one of the most anticipated releases of the summer, is scheduled to hit Spanish screens on 1st July.
Attendees, many dressed in yellow t-shirts reminiscent of the iconic characters, formed a long queue that snaked down Preciados Street. In a small studio set up by Universal in the square, participants over 18 had the unique opportunity to record a line from the trailer. The atmosphere was charged with enthusiasm and creativity, with influential figures like Erra Aslani and Juan Beato present to encourage the hopefuls.
In this new cinematic installment, the adorable Minions face a monumental challenge after losing everything. To save the world from the chaos they themselves have unleashed by releasing fearsome monsters, they must join forces and prove their worth as heroes. This plot twist has generated great anticipation among fans.
Despite the festive atmosphere in Callao, social media quickly ignited with criticism towards the initiative. Many users expressed concern for the respect towards the dubbing actors' guild. Although those selected will receive financial compensation for their work, authoritative voices like that of the representative of the Adoma union, Raúl Lara, warn about the job encroachment facing this profession.
Lara emphasizes that such campaigns are more commercial strategies than real opportunities for new talent. “It’s not the creative department’s responsibility but that of marketing,” he clarifies. He also stresses that these decisions can harm both the final quality of the product and the public perception of the professional work behind dubbing.
As the casting closed after eight hours filled with vibrant performances and renewed hopes, all those ‘minions’ returned to their daily routines while anxiously awaiting a decisive phone call. Universal will soon announce who the lucky ones will be to bring these endearing characters to life in a film that promises to entertain and move the entire Spanish family this summer.
