An event that celebrates tradition and ecology
The Community of Madrid is preparing to experience one of its most emblematic celebrations: the sixth edition of the Fiesta del Toro. This year, nearly 90% of the cattle participating in the festivities will come from local farms, reaffirming the region's commitment to its cultural and ecological heritage.
During a recent event, the Minister of Environment, Agriculture and Interior, Carlos Novillo, highlighted that 22 of the 25 scheduled events will feature specimens raised on Madrid soil. This figure not only reflects a strong cultural connection but also a significant growth in the number of cattle. Since 2019, farms have increased their population of fighting bulls, rising from 12,734 to 14,227, which represents a remarkable increase of 12%.
In parallel to this celebration, an exhibition titled ‘The Fighting Bull, a Jewel of Our Ecological and Cultural Heritage‘ has been inaugurated, organized alongside the Royal Union of Breeders of Fighting Bulls. The exhibition consists of ten double-sided mupis that provide a visual journey through the different stages of the fighting bull and its crucial role in the ecosystems where it is raised.
Over the past year, the regional government has implemented various measures to support local farmers. In total, more than 1 million euros in exceptional aid has been granted during the pandemic to mitigate the negative effects on their activities. These subsidies have benefited numerous farms affected by health restrictions.
As the Fiesta del Toro progresses, it also opens a door for new talents in the bullfighting world. The event provides an ideal platform for young aspirants like Roberto Martín ‘Jarocho’ or Álvaro Burdiel, who are training at the regional school José Cubero ‘Yiyo’. These events not only promote bullfighting culture but also encourage professional development among new generations.
The program will culminate in a Grand Final on July 30 at the Monumental bullring of Las Ventas. This event promises to be a memorable spectacle and a celebration of the cultural and natural legacy represented by the fighting bull in Madrid.
