The rehabilitation of Vicente Aleixandre's residence will begin in the last quarter of 2026. The project aims to turn the building into a cultural centre dedicated to poetry.
The Community of Madrid has officially launched the bidding process for the comprehensive renovation of Velintonia, the home of Nobel Prize winner Vicente Aleixandre. With an allocated budget of 2.9 million euros, the works are scheduled to start in the last quarter of the year. This ambitious project aims to transform the historic residence into the House of Poetry, a cultural space expected to open to the public in 2027. The intervention will not only focus on restoring and preserving the original architectural elements of the building but will also include small museographic stations showcasing its state prior to the renovation and significant scenes related to the writer.
The design includes careful preservation of the ground floor, where the original finishes and rooms will be protected. To facilitate public access without altering the historic entrance, a main access point will be created from the semi-basement level via Calle del Atajo. Additionally, a landscaping intervention is planned to restore the garden and protect its iconic cedar of Lebanon.
This project is managed by Planifica Madrid, a public company linked to the Ministry of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration. Planifica has recently been responsible for other significant cultural works, such as those at the Picasso Museum in Buitrago de Lozoya. The deadline for submitting applications is 11 September, with an estimated timeframe for completing the works of fifteen months.
The House of Aleixandre will not only be a tribute to the poet but also an active centre for promoting new contemporary poetic voices. Various activities such as talks and exhibitions are planned to celebrate the literary legacy and encourage creation among young authors.
Over time, Velintonia has witnessed the passage and discussions between key figures such as Federico García Lorca and Luis Cernuda. Since its acquisition by the regional government after years of disuse, this project aims to revitalise not only the building but also its rich literary history.
