The Madrid Government speaks out on concerts at the Bernabéu
In a recent press conference, the spokesperson for the Community of Madrid, Miguel Ángel García Martín, made it clear that no specific regulations will be created to facilitate the holding of concerts at the iconic Santiago Bernabéu stadium. This statement comes in response to claims made by the president of Real Madrid, Florentino Pérez, who had suggested that special regulations were being prepared for these events.
García Martín emphasised that any legislative initiative arising from the regional government will always prioritise "the public interest". In his statements, he highlighted the importance of finding a balance between hosting large musical events and respecting the rights and rest of the neighbours. "We will always seek a balance between rest and coexistence with all those large events," he stated during his address.
The councillor's words were a clear denial of the expectations generated by Florentino Pérez, who had hinted that both the City Council and the Community were willing to implement favourable rules to facilitate concerts at this iconic sports venue. García Martín made it clear that there will be no exceptions and that any regulatory changes will apply to all public spaces without distinctions.
Despite the tensions generated by this issue, it is important to mention that for approximately a year, the regional government led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso has been working on a comprehensive reform of its Public Shows and Recreational Activities Law (Lepar). However, so far, there has been no significant progress in its official processing, as not even a legislative draft has been published on the matter.
The main objective behind this reform is to provide greater control and legal security for extraordinary shows held in Madrid. Nevertheless, this modification does not contemplate any specific exceptions for the Santiago Bernabéu stadium, which could limit the aspirations of the merengue club to organise more musical events.
