A new chapter in the electoral contest
The fight for the presidency of Real Madrid has taken an unexpected turn with the recent installation of a billboard in the heart of Madrid. The banner, which carries a direct message to Florentino Pérez, reads: "FOR SALE. Call Florentino Pérez." This act, carried out by opposing candidate Enrique Riquelme, aims to highlight his concerns about the future direction of the club.
Placed between Velázquez and Diego de León streets, the banner is not only a call to action for Madrid fans but also an open criticism of the intentions Riquelme attributes to Pérez. In his message, Riquelme poses a rhetorical question: "And what are you going to do? Real Madrid is not for sale," emphasising his stance against what he considers a possible sale of the club to foreign funds.
Riquelme has been clear in his previous statements, warning that if Florentino Pérez wins the elections, the future of the club could be at risk. According to him, this would mean opening the door to drastic changes in Real Madrid's corporate model and jeopardising over 120 years of history. "The risk is not just how much it is sold for; opening that door means losing control forever," he stated during a recent press conference.
As the elections approach, fans are divided. Some openly support Riquelme's candidacy and his critical approach towards Pérez, while others defend the current president for his successful track record at the helm of the club. Social media has erupted with comments both in favour of and against this new advertising strategy.
As the electoral campaigns within Real Madrid intensify, such actions are becoming increasingly common. Riquelme's banner represents not only a personal attack on Pérez but also a reflection of the tense and competitive climate surrounding these crucial elections for the club's future.
