A New Era at the Prado Museum
The National Prado Museum, one of the most emblematic in Spain, has decided to take a significant step towards improving the experience of its visitors. From now on, the maximum number of people per group will be reduced to 20, a measure aimed at optimizing circulation and facilitating closer interaction with the masterpieces it houses.
This decision is part of the Host Project, which aims to transform the way groups enjoy the collections. Although this new regulation comes into effect immediately, already scheduled groups will be able to maintain their current number until 1 June 2026.
Miguel Falomir, the museum's director, had anticipated this change in January by expressing his concern about preventing the Prado from resembling a “rush hour subway.” The deputy director, Marina Chinchilla, has supported this initiative by stating that “the reduction in the maximum number of members contributes to a better quality of the visit,” which benefits both the participants and the museum itself.
Aside from limiting group sizes, the museum has also decided to direct organized visits towards less crowded time slots. This will allow not only for a better experience for visitors but also for a more efficient management of daily flow. Currently, around 1,609 people visit the museum daily in groups.
Regarding temporary exhibitions, the limit will remain at 15 people per group, although there is the possibility of further reducing this number if necessary to ensure an optimal visit. On the other hand, educational groups will continue with the current limit set at 30 people, thus ensuring that students can fully enjoy art and culture.
