A Match Marked by Controversy

The recent encounter between Mallorca and Espanyol has left a trail of debate in the football world, focusing on a refereeing decision that has generated mixed opinions. At a crucial moment in the match, Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea, the main referee, decided to validate a goal by Mallorca despite warnings from the video assistant referee (VAR) about a possible prior foul.

The incident occurred in the 65th minute, when Espanyol was leading 0-1 and was down to ten men after Pickel's expulsion. The equaliser came from the Cantabrian Pablo Torre, who scored following an action that the VAR officials deemed questionable. According to them, there was a foul by Samú Costa on Urko González, which should have invalidated the goal.

Despite the recommendations from VAR referee Jorge Figueroa Vázquez, who suggested reviewing the play for a possible infringement, De Burgos Bengoetxea maintained his initial decision. "That’s not good enough for me," was his emphatic response upon viewing the provided footage. Over nearly three minutes and after reviewing multiple replays, the referee insisted he was not clear whether there had been sufficient contact to annul the goal.

As the review progressed, De Burgos Bengoetxea requested more clarity in the footage. "Do you have another one? I can’t clearly see that he hits the heel," he argued while meticulously examining each frame. The insistence from the VAR team to provide him with different angles and clearer shots did not change his perception of the play.

Despite the doubts raised by VAR and the efforts to find conclusive evidence, De Burgos Bengoetxea decided to uphold his original decision: to award the goal to Mallorca. This action proved decisive as Samú Costa later scored another goal in the 88th minute, sealing a crucial victory for his team and temporarily lifting them out of the relegation zone.

This episode has reignited debates about the effectiveness and reliability of the VAR system in critical situations like this. Many fans and experts question whether it is truly fulfilling its purpose or if it is becoming a new source of controversy within the sport.
