A controversial incident in the heart of Madrid
The Reina Sofía Museum, one of Spain's main cultural landmarks, is at the centre of a controversy following the expulsion of three Israeli tourists who were carrying Jewish symbols. This incident, which occurred last weekend, has sparked an intense debate about religious freedom and discrimination in public spaces.
The situation escalated when a museum guard asked the visitors to hide their Israeli flags and Stars of David, arguing that other attendees were feeling uncomfortable. The scene was recorded by a Spanish woman accompanying the tourists and quickly went viral on social media, provoking reactions both nationally and internationally.
In response to social and media pressure, the museum has decided to open a internal investigation to clarify the facts. In an official statement, they reaffirmed their commitment to equality and zero tolerance towards antisemitism. "We will not rest until we clarify what happened," stated the institution.
Despite the protocol that prohibits the use of flags with poles inside the venue—a measure aimed at protecting the artworks—sources from the museum have clarified that the women were not carrying flags with poles. This has led to questioning whether there was a valid justification for their expulsion.
The organisation Action and Communication on the Middle East (ACOM) has announced its intention to take legal action against the museum for what they consider discriminatory conduct. ACOM has described this act as "unbearable antisemitism" and has urged a deep reflection on how such situations are handled in public institutions funded by all Spanish citizens.
From the Israeli Embassy in Spain, official voices have also expressed their concern. Minister Counsellor Dan Poraz highlighted that "the climate in Spain has made Jewish identity feel like a provocation." Meanwhile, Dana Erlich, charge d'affaires at the embassy, criticised what she sees as hypocrisy in allowing other displays without issues while viewing any symbol related to Israel with suspicion.
As this case moves towards a formal investigation, a broader debate arises about how cultural institutions address sensitive issues related to national and religious identities.
