A step towards inclusion in sport
In an unprecedented move, the FIFA has sanctioned the Israeli Football Association (IFA), imposing a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs, equivalent to approximately 164,272 euros. This decision stems from a complaint filed by the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) in May 2024, which conducted a thorough investigation into discriminatory practices in Israeli football.
The Disciplinary Committee of the world football governing body determined that the IFA had violated Articles 13 and 15 of its Disciplinary Code, which address offensive conduct and racist aggression. As part of the sanctions, Israel must adopt a comprehensive plan to prevent discrimination, which includes reforms and educational campaigns both in stadiums and on official channels.
Additionally, it has been stipulated that during their next three home matches, the Israeli national team must display a banner with the message: “Football unites the world – No to discrimination”. This message will be accompanied by the IFA emblem and must be submitted for approval at least 15 days before each match.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasised that while football cannot resolve geopolitical conflicts, it plays a fundamental role as a platform to promote values such as peace and mutual respect. “We are committed to using the power of football to build bridges,” Infantino stated during a recent conference.
The investigation focused on allegations regarding Israeli teams operating from Palestinian territories and racist behaviour among fans. FIFA concluded that the IFA had not taken adequate measures in response to incendiary statements or persistent discriminatory attitudes within the football sphere.
As these sanctions are implemented, a record budget from FIFA for the 2027-2030 cycle is also highlighted, exceeding 12 billion euros. These funds are intended for the global development of football and include investments in infrastructure and training.
