Mercedes Zarzalejo, new Minister of Education in Madrid
The Community of Madrid has made a significant shift in its cabinet by appointing Mercedes Zarzalejo as the new Minister of Education, Science and Universities. This change comes after the dismissal of Emilio Viciana, who had held the position since the elections in May 2023. The regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, aims to revitalise this key area of government with a renewed focus and a clear strategy to tackle current challenges.
The context that has led to this change centres on two crucial aspects: the Regional Universities Law and the funding model for public centres. Both issues have generated tensions between the regional government and public universities, which have expressed concern over the current financial situation. The regional executive has indicated that this appointment is part of an effort to make progress on these outstanding issues and achieve consensus with educational institutions.
Zarzalejo is no stranger to the educational field; until now she served as Deputy Minister of Universities, Research and Science. Her academic background includes a doctorate in Law from the University of Córdoba and a degree in Law from the Complutense University. Additionally, she has political experience as mayor and councillor of the Town Hall of San Martín de Valdeiglesias from 2015 to 2023, as well as a deputy in the Assembly of Madrid from 2023 to 2025.
Despite the change in leadership, challenges persist. The final approval of the regulatory project on university funding remains a priority for Ayuso. It was expected that this document would be ready before the end of the year, but so far there have been no significant advances due to disagreements with university rectors. With Mercedes Zarzalejo at the helm, a new approach is anticipated that will facilitate the necessary dialogue to reach agreements.
The regional government has expressed confidence that this change will bring about a new era at the head of the Ministry. The goal is clear: to promote ambitious projects that benefit the entire Madrid educational community. This appointment will be officially formalised tomorrow through its publication in the Official Bulletin of the Community of Madrid (BOCM), thus marking a new chapter in educational policies under Ayuso's mandate.
