The uncertainty looms over Iraqi football
The national team of Iraq is in a critical situation as their playoff match for the 2026 World Cup, to be held in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, approaches. With the conflict in the Middle East intensifying, the Iraqi federation has formally requested FIFA to postpone the match scheduled for March 31 against the winner of the duel between Suriname and Bolivia.
The escalation of tensions in the region has severely complicated the team's preparations. Following recent military attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran, Iraq has found itself caught in an unstable environment that directly affects its national team. The Iraqi airspace will remain closed until April 1, preventing many players from leaving the country to join the team.
Australian coach Graham Arnold has expressed his frustration over this situation. From Dubai, where he is currently located, he made an urgent plea: “Please help us with this match, because right now we are struggling to get our players out of the country.” The difficulty lies not only in the logistics of travel; several coaching staff members and players have yet to receive their necessary visas to enter Mexico or the United States.
Despite alternative proposals offered by FIFA — such as making a 25-hour land trip to Turkey before flying to Mexico — Iraq has rejected these options due to the additional complications they involve. The Iraqi federation believes these measures do not guarantee the safety and well-being of its players during this very delicate period.
