The City Council of Leganés will allocate 301,809.50 euros to improve the athletics track and municipal swimming pools. The investment aims to optimise the quality of local sports and the maintenance of the facilities.
Leganés has decided to invest a total of 301,809.50 euros in the renovation of several municipal sports facilities, focusing its efforts on the athletics track at the El Carrascal Sports Complex and the purification systems of the El Carrascal and Olimpia swimming pools. This intervention comes after identifying deficiencies in the existing infrastructure, especially in the track, which was reconstructed just six years ago but whose quality has been questioned by the current municipal government.
The first part of the project will focus on renewing the main straight of the athletics track, as well as the areas designated for events such as long jump and triple jump. For this, 112,676.71 euros will be allocated. The work will include sanding and repaving using a system known as retoping, which will allow the current pavement to be utilised while replacing the lower layer in the most deteriorated areas.
The objective is clear: to recover the technical performance necessary to ensure the safety and optimal performance of the athletes who use these facilities.
Aside from the track, a significant part of the budget, 189,132.79 euros, will be invested in modernising the hydraulic and purification systems in two municipal swimming pools. At El Carrascal, filters, pipes, and valves will be replaced for both adults and children; additionally, the facilities will be reorganised to facilitate maintenance.
Regarding the adult pool at Olimpia, a new filtration system with greater capacity will be installed, which will include new filters and pumps. Joints in the tanks will also be sealed to ensure better water quality.
These projects have an estimated execution period of one month. The intention of the City Council is not only to improve conditions for practising water and athletics sports but also to optimise the general maintenance of these facilities that are heavily used by citizens.
Despite the consensus among some political groups regarding this necessary investment to revitalise local sports, there was opposition during its approval in the municipal Plenary. The budget modification was supported by PP and ULEG; however, PSOE, Más Madrid, and Podemos-IU-Alianza Verde voted against it while Vox chose to abstain. As there was a tie between votes for and against, it was necessary to resort to the decisive vote of the president of the Plenary to push this crucial proposal forward.
As these works progress over the next month, residents will soon be able to enjoy renovated facilities that promote safer and more efficient sports practice.
