Figo speaks out on Carvajal's situation
At a recent event titled ‘The Forum’, held at the iconic Metropolitano stadium, former footballer Luis Figo did not hesitate to express his support for Real Madrid player Dani Carvajal. Figo highlighted that Carvajal "deserves all the respect" and emphasised the importance of better communication from the coaching staff, especially from coach Álvaro Arbeloa.
Figo, who has experienced similar situations during his career, stressed that an experienced player like Carvajal should be treated with more consideration. "A player with a certain veteran status should be treated differently in terms of communication," he stated. This remark resonates particularly after Carvajal's recent injuries, which have raised uncertainty about his physical condition and his role within the team.
The former player also reflected on how the dynamic between footballers and their clubs has changed. According to Figo, nowadays players have more control over their image thanks to social media. "Players are not as dependent on the club for visibility," he commented. Despite acknowledging the advantages that this new digital era brings, Figo warned about the dangers facing modern football. "If football is only entertainment, there is a risk of losing its essence," he pointed out. While he understands the need to globalise to achieve greater international recognition, he fears that this could compromise local competitions.
Finally, Figo shared a valuable lesson for young footballers: being well surrounded is essential for properly managing their finances after their sporting careers end. He recalled how many of his teammates found themselves without resources at the end of their careers due to a lack of proper planning.
