An unexpected outcome in the Africa Cup 2025
The recent final of the Africa Cup 2025 has left a bitter taste for Senegalese fans. Despite winning the match against Morocco with a score of 1-0, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) is embroiled in a legal battle after being declared the loser due to "non-appearance." This unexpected turn has led Senegal to file an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), seeking to overturn what they consider an unjust decision.
The match, held on January 18, was marked by significant controversy. Senegal decided to temporarily leave the field after a penalty was awarded to the Moroccan team, which created tensions between the players and the referee. However, after a brief pause, they returned to the pitch and managed to score thanks to a goal from midfielder Pape Gueye.
Despite Senegal's victory on the scoreboard, the Moroccan federation lodged a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Under articles 82 and 84 of the tournament regulations, CAF ruled that Senegal had violated the rules by leaving the field, resulting in their declaration as losers by non-appearance and awarding the title to Morocco with a fictitious score of 3-0.
The FSF quickly expressed its dissatisfaction with this ruling. In an official statement, they described the decision as "unjust" and "unacceptable," arguing that it undermines the fundamental principles of African sport.
