A forensic analysis that changes the narrative
In an unexpected turn during the trial over the death of Diego Armando Maradona, forensic experts have confirmed that the football icon did not suffer a sudden death, but rather experienced a prolonged agony before his passing. This testimony was presented at the seventh hearing of the judicial process, which seeks to clarify the circumstances surrounding his tragic departure.
The forensic doctor Federico Corasaniti, who conducted the autopsy on November 25, 2020, highlighted that Maradona showed clear signs of progressive deterioration. According to Corasaniti, the football star exhibited "signs of generalized edema," indicating a severe accumulation of fluid in his body due to failures in vital organs. "This cannot be sudden," he stated categorically, dismissing any possibility of a sudden death.
The findings of the analysis also included a surprising discovery: a "false foam fungus" in the mouth cavity of the former footballer. This phenomenon, commonly associated with drowning victims, was attributed to a critical mixture of air and liquid in the airways caused by severe pulmonary edema.
Apart from the edema, medical reports revealed that Maradona's heart weighed 503 grams, almost double the normal size, with significant fibrosis and muscle damage. The histopathologist Silvana De Piero also confirmed that Maradona suffered from liver cirrhosis and severe kidney problems, conditions that can develop rapidly.
Another crucial point presented before the San Isidro Court was the complete absence of gastric content in the footballer's stomach. This fact contradicts the initial claims made by those close to him about his last hours before his death. Furthermore, toxicological analyses indicated that there were no traces of either alcohol or illegal drugs in his system.
As this complex legal case progresses, the prosecution maintains that all these findings point to serious medical negligence. Seven healthcare professionals are being investigated for possible charges related to homicide with eventual intent. Among them are prominent figures such as neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, as well as other specialists responsible for the daily care of the footballer.
