The career of footballer Álvaro Aguado, former player of RCD Español, is at a critical juncture following the request for nine years in prison by the Prosecutor's Office. The athlete, currently on provisional release, faces serious accusations related to an alleged sexual assault on a club employee during a private event in June 2024.
According to the account presented by the Prosecutor's Office, the incidents occurred in the early hours of June 24, inside the men's bathroom of the Opium Barcelona nightclub. This event was held to commemorate Espanyol's promotion to the First Division and brought together several club employees. The complaint states that Aguado took the woman out of a reserved room and, after a failed attempt to access another area, led her to the bathroom where the assault allegedly took place.
The victim has stated that she was in shock and repeatedly rejected any kind of sexual relationship. In her account, after the incident, Aguado got dressed and told her that there was no connection between them. The Prosecutor's Office has classified the acts as sexual assault with vaginal and oral penetration, which has led to a request not only for imprisonment but also for a total compensation of 65,000 euros, broken down into 55,000 euros for moral damages and 10,000 euros for psychological consequences.
In addition to the requested penalties, the Public Prosecutor has proposed additional measures to protect the complainant. These include restrictions on proximity and even communication between the two for an extended period after the potential completion of the sentence.
Aguado has admitted to having sexual relations with the woman but maintains that they were consensual. This claim sharply contrasts with the consistent testimony provided by the complainant, who was deemed credible by the investigating judge. Forensic reports support the initial allegations as being consistent with sexual assault.
In the wake of the scandal, Aguado has been without a team since his contract with Espanyol ended last summer. Despite the serious accusations, the club did not take immediate disciplinary action due to the legal principle of presumption of innocence.
