A Clause That Determines Mourinho's Fate
The arrival of José Mourinho at Benfica in September 2025 has been surrounded by expectations and surprises. Recently, a peculiar clause in his contract has been revealed, allowing both the club and the coach to break the bond within a specific timeframe after the current season concludes.
This contractual move is no coincidence; it is closely linked to the presidential elections of the Lisbon club. Rui Costa, the current president, faced Joao Noronha Lopes, and to prevent a new leader from inheriting a coach not of their preference, this measure was adopted. Had Rui Costa lost the elections, the new president would have had the option to quickly sever ties with Mourinho.
As the deadline to activate this clause approaches, Benfica fans are on edge. The team's last match took place on May 16 against Estoril, meaning that time is running out. This Tuesday, the 26th at 23:59:59 is crucial; until that moment, Mourinho could leave the club by paying a compensation of 3 million euros net, a figure that rises to nearly 7 million gross due to taxes.
From May 27 onwards, if Mourinho decides to stay with Benfica, any interested club will have to negotiate directly with the Lisbon entity. In this scenario, the clause drastically transforms: the cost to release him would increase to 15 million euros, equivalent to his gross salary.
As speculation intensifies about the immediate future of the team, names like Marco Silva have begun to emerge as possible successors. Silva's contract with Fulham ends on June 30, and he could be a viable option if Mourinho decides to leave.
Not only is the continuity or departure of the Portuguese coach at stake; Benfica must also prepare to face the second qualifying round for the Europa League scheduled for July 23. Despite finishing third in the national league, this does not guarantee them direct access to the European tournament.
