The regional government has announced the sale of a penthouse in Chamberí and four properties on Gran Vía to finance the reconstruction after the fire in Sierra Oeste. The operation is valued at 20 million euros.
The Community of Madrid has decided to sell a luxurious penthouse located on General Martínez Campos Avenue, in the Chamberí district, with an initial price of 6.7 million euros. This decision is part of a broader strategy that also includes the sale of four properties situated on Gran Vía, whose combined price amounts to 11.8 million euros. The total expected from both transactions is close to 20 million euros, funds that will be allocated to assist in the reconstruction following the devastating fire that affected Sierra Oeste. The Minister of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, has emphasized that this measure is crucial to support recovery efforts. The community had previously acquired these properties to facilitate the necessary works at the Real Casa de Correos, where a temporary office was required for the regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso. However, this purchase has sparked controversy and criticism from the opposition political sector. The left has openly questioned this acquisition and has taken the matter to court, accusing the regional government of using public resources to obtain an official residence. Ayuso has defended her position arguing that it would be ‘unwise’ to seek a house that could not be hidden and suggesting that the criticisms aim to cause political harm. The available lots for bidding are divided: one includes the four registered properties located on Gran Vía and the other corresponds to the aforementioned penthouse. The properties have outstanding architectural features; for example, the building in the Gran Vía lot was constructed in 1925 and has comprehensive protection due to its historical value. The penthouse, on the other hand, was designed by Luis Gutiérrez Soto and stands out for its rationalist facade. Interested parties may submit offers until 23:59 hours on 7 September, with a minimum bid required for each lot. The awarding will be made to the highest bidder for each property individually. This sale not only represents a significant economic opportunity for the regional government but also a focal point on how public assets are managed and their subsequent use.
