The City Council of Leganés is increasing its investment in the prepaid card programme, benefiting over 225 families in vulnerable situations. The allocation rises by 57% compared to the previous year.
The City Council of Leganés has decided to enhance its support for families in vulnerable situations through a significant increase in the budget allocated to the prepaid card programme. This initiative, which allows for the purchase of food and basic products, will see its funding rise from 300,000 euros in 2024 to a total of 473,000 euros. This increase is part of the municipality's effort to meet the basic material needs of the most disadvantaged citizens.
The measure, which is being implemented for the third consecutive year within the Basic Material Assistance programme promoted by the Community of Madrid, has allowed more than 225 families to access food and essential items. According to the City Council, such initiatives are crucial to ensure that households with dependents can meet their basic needs.
The prepaid cards are co-financed by 90% from the European Social Fund Plus 2021-2027, highlighting the importance of European support in the fight against poverty and social exclusion. Through this system, beneficiaries can make purchases at authorised establishments, ensuring that the funds are used exclusively for necessary products such as food and personal hygiene items.
To access this assistance, interested individuals must be registered in Leganés and be part of a family unit with at least one dependent child. Additionally, it is necessary to demonstrate a precarious economic situation: income must be below 48% of the national average income. Applications can be processed by requesting an appointment with the social workers of the City Council, either in person or via email.
Aside from direct financial support, the programme includes a personalised pathway designed for each family following an individual assessment. This social support encompasses information about available resources and referrals to educational and health services. Councillor Jesús Rodríguez has emphasised the “intense work” done to reach more families in need.
