A step towards the energy future
In an unexpected turn for the Spanish energy landscape, Westinghouse has decided to establish an AP1000 reactor simulator in Madrid, despite the country's trend towards closing its nuclear facilities. This simulator, which represents the most advanced nuclear technology available, will become a key centre for training qualified operators in the management of these third-generation reactors.
The AP1000 reactors are known for their ability to generate over 1GW of electricity and for incorporating passive safety systems, allowing them to shut down automatically in case of failures without relying on external generators. This feature is particularly relevant following incidents such as the blackout that occurred in April. Additionally, their robust design enables them to operate under extreme conditions, from temperatures reaching -40 ºC to 50 ºC.
With this decision, Spain positions itself as the first European country and third worldwide to have an AP1000 simulator, following in the footsteps of the United States and China. The facility will not only serve to train future operators but will also attract international experts to the country. According to Luca Oriani, president of new reactors at Westinghouse, Madrid offers a strategic location that facilitates the arrival and collaboration with highly qualified Spanish engineers.
Despite the technological advancement and educational opportunities this simulator represents, the current situation of the Spanish nuclear sector is complex. The government's intention is to close existing plants; however, Oriani remains optimistic about the future: “Political debates change” and he anticipates that Spain will eventually return to building new nuclear power plants. Although this is not expected to happen immediately, he does consider it inevitable that, in light of the growing energy demand both nationally and across Europe, favourable decisions towards nuclear energy will be made.
Xavier Coll, president of Westinghouse Spain, emphasises that between 75% and 80% of Spanish nuclear specialists are currently working abroad. This figure highlights not only the quality of local talent but also its growing importance on the international stage. With this new training centre in Madrid, Westinghouse aims to capitalise on this experience and prepare a new generation ready to face future energy challenges.
