The Rivas City Council has approved an ambitious project to cover 2.5 kilometres of Line 9B of the Metro. This work will transform the area into a green corridor that will connect residential and industrial areas.
Rivas is preparing to take a significant step towards sustainability and improving urban mobility. The Local Government Board has approved the technical project that will allow for the covering of 2.5 kilometres of Line 9B of the Metro, creating a green corridor that will be 30 metres wide. This space will not only provide meeting areas for residents but will also facilitate connections between areas currently separated by the train tracks.
Construction will begin in the section that connects the Rivas Urbanizaciones and Rivas Futura stations. Prefabricated concrete walls will be built on both sides of the track, covered by a slab that will support the future park. This innovative design will allow the metro to continue operating for much of the construction process, thereby minimising inconvenience to users.
The new green corridor will integrate with the existing Linear Park from the Cerro del Telégrafo sports centre, which is crucial for rebalancing the municipality. Currently, residential and industrial areas are disconnected due to the railway layout, making transit and social cohesion among residents difficult.
The City Council has highlighted that “the covering of the metro will not only improve mobility and reduce environmental impact but will also contribute to rebalancing the municipality.” This initiative responds to a growing citizen demand for green and accessible spaces in densely populated urban environments.
Funding for this ambitious project will come from a loan granted by the Council of Europe Development Bank. The necessary budget modification was recently approved in a municipal plenary session, allowing for the immediate start of construction work.
