An unprecedented February for Madrid's reservoirs

The Community of Madrid has experienced an exceptional weather phenomenon that has led its reservoirs to reach 86% of their total capacity. According to the latest reports from the regional government, the water reserves managed by Canal de Isabel II stand at 811.6 cubic hectometres (hm3), a figure significantly higher than the historical average and not seen in over three decades.

February witnessed 369.6 hm3 of contributions to the reservoirs, marking the largest volume since 1920. This increase is due to the heavy rains that have fallen over the region, reaching a total of 124.6 litres per square metre, which represents an increase of 177.9% compared to the usual average for this month.

On February 10, one of the highest flows in recent history was recorded, with nearly 400 cubic metres per second (m3/s). This situation forced Canal de Isabel II to simultaneously discharge from up to 11 infrastructures to manage the excess water and ensure safety at the dams. Although some facilities like Pedrezuela and Manzanares El Real are still discharging, they are doing so at significantly reduced flows.

As spring approaches, experts are keeping a close eye on weather forecasts. With the memory of the rainy March of 2025 still fresh in the collective mind, there is concern about how to manage potential new heavy rainfall. The current high capacity of the reservoirs could further complicate this task if similar episodes occur again.

As global climate continues to change, phenomena like these could become more frequent. Environmental authorities emphasise the importance of efficient water management to cope with both droughts and sudden floods. The current situation is a clear reminder of how climatic conditions can drastically alter our water reserves and how we must be prepared to adapt.
