You have just bought or sold a second-hand car in Madrid and now you have to face one of the most tedious procedures of adult life: the transfer of ownership. It’s not complicated, but it does have its nuances, costs, and, of course, queues. Here’s everything you need to know to do it right, without surprises and, if possible, without stepping into an office.
What documents the buyer and seller need for the transfer
Before doing anything, you need to gather the paperwork. It’s not much, but if something is missing, the process will be halted, so it’s better to go with everything from the start.
The seller must provide:
- Valid DNI or NIE
- Original vehicle registration document
- Technical data sheet (technical inspection card)
- Proof of having passed the ITV (if applicable)
- In the case of legal entities, deed of powers or representation
The buyer needs:
- Valid DNI or NIE
- Proof of payment of the Property Transfer Tax (ITP), which must be settled before submitting the transfer application

Online agency: the option without queues or leaving home
Anyone who wants to transfer a car without making an appointment at Traffic can do so completely online through specialized agencies. The process is simple: you upload the documentation, pay the ITP electronically, and the agency takes care of the rest. The updated registration document arrives by mail in a few days. No waiting, no travel, and often in shorter timeframes than going in person.
