A new era for mobility in Madrid
The Spanish capital takes a significant step towards improving its urban mobility with the expansion of the Aparca+T programme, which now includes over 3,200 new free parking spaces. This initiative aims to encourage drivers to leave their vehicles in strategic areas and use public transport to access the city centre.
The park-and-ride facilities are located at key points, such as train and bus stations, allowing users to park at no cost. This system not only helps reduce traffic in the most congested areas but also promotes a more efficient use of public transport. Instead of dealing with high parking prices in the centre, Madrileños can choose to leave their car in one of these free spaces and continue their journey by metro or bus.
Among the new locations are stations such as Las Matas, Pinar de Las Rozas, and El Barrial, as well as other important stops like El Casar and Móstoles-El Soto. In the capital, there are multiple options available: from Avenida Portugal to Ciudad Universitaria. This joint effort between Renfe and the Regional Transport Consortium aims to facilitate access to public transport, making it a more attractive option for everyone.
To benefit from free parking, drivers must demonstrate that they have previously used public transport. This can be done with a transport pass or a single ticket. Once this requirement is met, it is possible to leave the vehicle parked for a period ranging from five to sixteen hours.
As Madrid continues to face challenges related to traffic congestion and environmental pollution, initiatives like Aparca+T are crucial for promoting a more sustainable culture. Encouraging citizens to use their cars less will not only improve air quality in the city but also contribute to creating a more liveable urban environment.
