A closure that will transform mobility in Madrid
Starting tomorrow at 6:00 AM, the Conde de Casal tunnel in Madrid will close its doors until February 2027, paving the way for a series of works that promise to revolutionise the way citizens move around the city. This ambitious project, driven by the City Council of Madrid, aims to improve the connection between lines 6 and 11 of the Metro, as well as to build a new interchange that will facilitate urban transit.
The delegate for Urbanism, Environment and Mobility, Borja Carabante, has announced that during this period, traffic will be diverted to the surface. Drivers will need to adapt to new routes, as two lanes will be opened for entry from the A-3 towards the Conde de Casal square and one for exit towards Valencia and the M-30 North. Additionally, the number of lanes available from the A-3 towards Madrid will be reduced.
Carabante has urged citizens to use public transport as an alternative in light of the potential inconveniences caused by the works. “We are aware of the impact this may have on residents,” he stated during a press conference following the Government Board.
Not only motorists will feel the repercussions; routes operated by the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) will also undergo modifications. Some lines will see their stops relocated or even strategic points removed on key avenues such as Mediterráneo. The heads of several lines will also be moved to the intermodal area of Pavones.
Despite the temporary chaos that these works may generate, Carabante assures that the future benefits will justify these inconveniences. The creation of the new interchange will help to decongest streets currently saturated with buses.
To minimise disruptions, drivers are advised to opt for alternative routes such as Mariano de Cavia or use detours towards O’Donnell or M-40 for longer journeys. Conversely, routes like Cavanilles or the southern link with M-30 are suggested to avoid congestion.
The City Council has implemented a special device with personnel from both the Municipal Police and Mobility Agents to ensure adequate traffic flow during this critical period. These measures are expected to help mitigate any inconvenience while the necessary works to modernise one of the most important axes of Madrid's transport system are carried out.
