A significant advance for travellers from southern Madrid
The construction of the new A-5 tunnel is taking shape and, with over two kilometres already excavated, a promising future is in sight for users of intercity public transport. This project will not only transform the road infrastructure but will also generate 70,000 square metres of free space on the surface, allowing for the creation of a new Southwest Green Walk that will connect the Latina neighbourhoods.
The inauguration is scheduled for November, at which point landscaping work over the tunnel will begin. This development aims to improve the quality of life in the area and provide citizens with a more pleasant and accessible environment.
One of the most notable features of the new tunnel is the inclusion of bus-VAO lanes, specifically designed to optimise travel time. These lanes will be located near the median and will allow intercity buses to avoid surface traffic. According to municipal estimates, journeys will be reduced by up to 11 minutes during peak hours, which represents a significant improvement for thousands of daily passengers.
During peak afternoon hours, travellers are expected to experience an average reduction of 4.5 minutes on their way home. With an estimated average capacity of 60 people per bus, this could translate into a total accumulated saving of over 1,000 hours weekly just in the outbound direction.
In addition to the time savings, a considerable increase in the average speed at which these buses will travel is anticipated. In the mornings, it is estimated that they will increase from a current maximum speed of 29.42 km/h to 36.25 km/h; while in the afternoons, they could reach up to 36.65 km/h from a previous speed of 28.10 km/h.
This increase will not only benefit direct users of public transport, but will also help to alleviate general traffic on this important Madrid thoroughfare.
Despite the structural change involved in the underground construction, the current lines will remain. Existing stops will be relocated near the tunnel at Aviación Española to facilitate access both in and out of Madrid. New exclusive stops for intercity buses are being considered to further enhance the user experience.
In total, 34 intercity lines will benefit from these improvements. Among them are those connecting towns like Alcorcón and Móstoles with Madrid. This transformation promises not only to make daily commutes more efficient but also to revitalise urban areas adjacent to the new Green Walk.
