Isabel Díaz Ayuso met with the mayors affected by the fire in the Sierra Oeste. Amid the political crisis, she defended the purchase of a €6.3 million penthouse without clarifying details.

The President of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, surprised many by attending a meeting with the 17 mayors of the municipalities affected by the devastating fire in the Sierra Oeste. This meeting, which was not scheduled in her agenda, occurred at a critical moment for Ayuso, who faces increasing political pressure due to the controversy surrounding the purchase and subsequent quick sale of a penthouse valued at €6.3 million. During her speech, Ayuso did not provide details about the reasons behind this real estate transaction or the intended use of the property. Instead, she deflected questions to her Government spokesperson, arguing that “the Presidency Department is the one with the detailed information”. The public company Planifica Madrid is responsible for the regional real estate assets and has been criticized for a lack of transparency regarding this operation.

In her defence, Ayuso used arguments appealing to common sense:

“It would be very unwise for me to look for a house where I cannot hide”

. She stated that if she had truly wanted to acquire a home for personal or official use since the beginning of her term, she would have done so. This statement arises in a context where many politicians have been criticized for their real estate decisions.

The scandal has grown since details about the penthouse were revealed: it has 485 square metres and an additional terrace of 200 square metres, which has fueled speculation about her real intentions. Despite the media uproar and persistent questions on this topic during her recent public appearances, Ayuso has maintained a defensive stance. On this occasion, she reiterated that she will use the penthouse for temporary meetings and criticized what she considers malicious attempts to link her personal residence with work-related issues.

The situation recalls other historical episodes where political figures have faced similar controversies related to luxurious properties. For instance, a few years ago, a former Spanish minister was criticized for acquiring a palace while cutting social budgets. Public perception plays a crucial role in these cases; citizens tend to be sensitive to any signs of corruption or abuse of power.

Meanwhile, the mayors present took the opportunity during the meeting to discuss the necessary measures to address the consequences of the recent forest fire. These discussions are expected to lead to concrete plans to help the affected communities recover quickly.

The meeting concluded without resolving the doubts about the penthouse or providing clarity on how this matter will be managed in the immediate future. Interested citizens can follow updates related to this case through the official portal of the regional Government or stay tuned for future public statements from Ayuso or her team.
