The political storm intensifies in Madrid
The political situation in Madrid has become more tense following the judicial summons of Miguel Ángel Rodríguez, Chief of Staff to the regional president, Isabel Díaz Ayuso. The opposition, represented by Más Madrid and the PSOE, has launched an offensive to demand his dismissal, claiming that his actions are incompatible with democratic principles.
Rodríguez is summoned to testify on May 6 regarding an investigation into the possible leak of personal data of two journalists. This scandal has led opposition groups to present legislative initiatives seeking not only his dismissal but also a public apology to those affected and a commitment from the Government to media independence.
Manuela Bergerot, leader of Más Madrid, has been clear in her demands during a recent press conference. She accused Rodríguez of “targeting media” and “spreading falsehoods,” extending her criticism to other members of the Popular Party such as Alfonso Serrano. The PNL presented by her party aims to establish a precedent regarding ethical and professional responsibility within the regional Government.
The PSOE, for its part, plans to bring this issue to the Plenary on Thursday. Its spokesperson, Mar Espinar, will directly question Díaz Ayuso about what she describes as “mafia-like practices.” Espinar argues that Rodríguez's actions are unacceptable and must be urgently addressed by the Madrid president.
Despite the growing opposition outcry, the Popular Party is trying to downplay the severity of the situation. The party spokesperson, Carlos Díaz-Pache, argues that the summons is part of the usual procedure following a complaint from the PSOE and reminds that there is already a prior dismissal by the Spanish Agency for Data Protection. According to him, this should be sufficient to dismiss any concerns about legal actions against Rodríguez.
Not only political parties are reacting; even the Government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, has expressed support for the opposition's demands. At a recent event, Martín emphasized that Rodríguez has demonstrated inappropriate behaviour by threatening and insulting journalists. For him, these attitudes represent a direct attack on fundamental democratic values.
As this political conflict unfolds, all eyes are on how the judicial process against Miguel Ángel Rodríguez will develop. The investigation remains open and could have significant repercussions not only for him but also for the political future of Isabel Díaz Ayuso if any serious irregularities are confirmed.
