Negotiations Underway for an Alternative World Cup
The Iranian national team is exploring the possibility of playing its matches in the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, a decision driven by concerns over the safety of its team during the tournament to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali had previously stated that the team would not participate in the event if conditions were not favourable.
Mehdi Taj, president of the Iranian Football Federation, has made it clear that following former President Donald Trump's statements regarding the safety of the Iranian team, it is unlikely they will travel to the U.S. “When Trump has clearly stated that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we definitely will not travel to the United States,” Taj commented. This stance has led Iran to seek viable alternatives to participate in the tournament without compromising the physical integrity of its players.
Abolfazl Psedniddeh, Iranian ambassador to Mexico, has been active in negotiations with FIFA to move the matches scheduled for the U.S. to Mexican territory. In an official statement issued by the Iranian embassy in Mexico, it was highlighted that this decision responds to “the lack of cooperation from the U.S. Government” regarding issues such as visas and logistical support necessary to prepare the team.
Tensions between Iran and the United States have been historical and continue to affect various areas, including sports. The current situation highlights how external factors can influence international sporting events. The Iranian team is placed in Group G alongside Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand; their debut is scheduled for June 15 against New Zealand.
As the World Cup dates approach, all eyes will be on both the administrative decisions and the possible logistical changes needed to ensure the participation of the Iranian team. FIFA will need to assess these requests while maintaining its commitment to an inclusive and safe event for all participants.
