During the annual congress of the organisation held in Vancouver, Infantino emphasised the importance of football as a vehicle to unite nations and promote a positive message.
Despite the tensions between Iran and the United States, Infantino quickly dispelled any doubts about the Iranian team's participation. “Of course, Iran is going to play in the United States,” he stated before representatives of the 211 member federations. This announcement comes in a context where diplomatic relations between the two countries are tense, raising concerns about the logistics and security of the Iranian team during the tournament.
However, the Iranian federation was not present at the congress due to issues related to its delegation. The president of their federation, Mehdi Taj, had to return to Iran after facing difficulties with immigration officials in Toronto. This situation has added an additional layer of complexity to the organisational process for the World Cup.
Despite these setbacks, Iran qualified by leading Group A during the qualifying phase of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The team is scheduled to play its matches in Los Angeles and Seattle against teams such as New Zealand and Belgium. However, recent military escalations have raised doubts about whether they will be able to participate without additional inconveniences.
Shortly before Infantino's official announcement, Iran's Minister of Sports, Ahman Donyamali, had expressed concerns about the necessary conditions for their national team to compete. In previous statements, he mentioned that following recent US and Israeli military attacks, there were no guarantees for safe participation.
Despite the tense climate between governments, it has been reported that even political figures such as Donald Trump have expressed support for the inclusion of the Iranian team in the world's most important sporting event. This highlights how sporting events can serve as platforms to foster constructive dialogues between nations.
