An unprecedented intervention
The National Police has carried out a monumental operation in the Community of Madrid, resulting in the seizure of over 600,000 counterfeit toys related to the popular series Stranger Things. This operation, considered the largest of its kind to date, has allowed for the recovery of approximately 25 tonnes of products that not only infringe industrial property rights but also pose a serious risk to minors.
The confiscated items primarily originated from China and were intended for distribution in the European market. However, their quality was significantly inferior to that of the original products and they did not meet the safety regulations required for marketing. Among the items found were plush toys, keychains, and other promotional items that unauthorizedly reproduce iconic elements from the series.
The investigation began in February when agents detected suspicious shipments coming from the Asian country. These shipments included irregular documentation and false data, complicating their tracking by the authorities. The first intervention allowed for the interception of 72 boxes, which led to the identification of the recipient and the location of the main storage point in an industrial warehouse in Parla.
Following the initial discovery, five simultaneous inspections were carried out in various industrial warehouses located in Getafe, Fuenlabrada, and Parla. In these operations, the bulk of the counterfeit material was uncovered. Additionally, the investigation was expanded to several logistics companies where another 36 boxes containing over 16,000 additional items were found.
This is not only an economic detriment for the legitimate rights holders of these products; there is also a serious risk to public safety. Many toys were made with fragile materials and contained small parts that could easily detach, thus increasing the potential danger for young children.
As a direct result of this operation, two individuals have been arrested as presumed responsible for crimes against industrial property. Both have been placed at the disposal of the judiciary after being identified as the lessee of the warehouse used and the person receiving the illegal goods.
As this operation concludes successfully, authorities underscore the ongoing importance of monitoring such illicit activities that threaten both consumers and the legal market. The fight against piracy remains an essential priority to ensure a safe and fair environment for all.
