A scandal shaking local politics
Politics in Móstoles, one of the most populated municipalities in the Community of Madrid, is at the centre of a media storm following serious allegations of sexual and workplace harassment against its mayor, Manuel Bautista. The complaint comes from a former councillor of the Popular Party (PP), who has claimed to have been a victim of inappropriate behaviour by the mayor. Despite calls for his resignation, Bautista has decided to stand firm in his position.
Isabel Díaz Ayuso, regional president and key figure of the PP, has defended the mayor, describing the allegations as an attempt to destabilise the party at a critical moment, just before the regional elections in Aragón. During a recent session in the Assembly of Madrid, Ayuso described the case as "fabricated" and suggested that it is more of a "labour dispute" than a serious matter related to harassment.
Alfonso Serrano, general secretary of the Madrid PP, also spoke on the matter. He acknowledged the existence of the internal complaint but insisted that there is no evidence to support the allegations. According to Serrano, during a meeting with the complainant, she was directly asked if she had suffered harassment or sexual abuse, and she categorically denied it.
Despite the growing calls for his resignation from opposition parties such as Más Madrid and PSOE, Manuel Bautista has reaffirmed his commitment to the position. In a recent public appearance, he stated: "I will continue to work as I always have," rejecting any insinuation of his guilt. He also mentioned internal disagreements within the party following the recent municipal elections as the context behind these allegations.
Bautista also revealed that the complainant had sent multiple emails to Ayuso expressing her grievances without initially mentioning any form of sexual harassment until she was legally advised. This detail has been used by the mayor to question the truthfulness and motivation behind the allegations.
The National Committee of Facts and Guarantees of the PP was responsible for investigating this situation due to the political relevance of the mayor. After reviewing the facts presented by the former councillor, they decided to archive the case as they found insufficient evidence to support the allegations made.
However, this has not stopped opposition parties who have demanded an extraordinary plenary session to discuss this matter and hold Mayor Bautista politically accountable. Pressure is mounting as criticisms towards Ayuso continue for not adequately addressing the complainant's concerns.
As this political crisis unfolds, it is clear that Móstoles is facing a turbulent period. Tensions between different political parties are reaching critical levels as each side attempts to position itself before its voters ahead of future elections. The current situation raises questions about how this will affect local governance and what measures both the PP and its opponents will take in light of this scandal.
