A scandal shaking local politics
The political climate in Móstoles has become tense following recent statements from the mayor, Manuel Bautista, who has claimed to be a victim of "political blackmail" by a former councillor who accused him of sexual harassment. In a press conference held on Thursday, Bautista stood firm in defending his honour and presumption of innocence, stating that the entire matter is being handled by his lawyer.
The controversy erupted when the former councillor filed a complaint with the Popular Party (PP), just after Bautista decided not to appoint her as deputy mayor following the 2023 municipal elections. According to the mayor, this decision was the trigger for the complaint, which he considers a deliberate attempt to discredit him.
Bautista also referred to recordings between him and the former councillor, where she supposedly indicated that she had not directly asked him for anything. However, the councillor clarified that there were indeed requests made to other members of the municipal team. "Indeed, you haven't asked me for anything… neither to be deputy mayor nor anything," can be heard in one of the leaked audio recordings.
This exchange has generated confusion and led Bautista to question the intentions behind the complaint. "If you are recording conversations, I understand that you have some purpose," he commented during his address to the media.
For its part, the PP has come to the defence of the mayor. The party's general secretary in Madrid, Alfonso Serrano, dismissed the accusations against Bautista and defended the integrity of the internal process carried out by the party's National Committee on Rights and Guarantees. Serrano emphasised that there was no pressure on the complainant nor any cover-up regarding the case.
Serrano also accused the former councillor of acting in "bad faith," suggesting that her actions were motivated by personal interests rather than a genuine desire for justice. Additionally, he warned of potential legal actions against those who spread false or malicious information about the party.
As elections in Aragón approach this Sunday, many political observers see this scandal as a strategic attempt to influence electoral outcomes. The timing of these accusations coinciding with other similar cases within the PSOE adds an additional layer to the public debate on how such situations are handled within the Spanish political sphere.
